The HOTH is an SEO Link Building & Content Company based out of St. Petersburg, FL. Our tools have helped power some of the largest SEO Agencies in the world.
What is The HOTH?
The HOTH is an acronym for Hittem Over The Head, in other words, to bludgeon with awesomeness. It can be used as a noun (as in our product, or our brand) or as a verb (i.e. To HOTH someone, to HOTH something).
We made a streamlined production system that allows us to deliver your custom projects and campaigns with agility, speed, and scale. All in a nicely wrapped interface that produces results for YOU, day in and day out.
Case Study Results
I ordered my Hoth package at the end of May and took note of my rankings for specific search terms I wanted to rank for. As the links are “drip fed” to look more natural, rather than an instant” jump” in rankings when using The Hoth it’s more normal to see a gradual rise as these links kick in so I decided to record my rankings at the end of June – 1 month later – to give the links a fair chance to have an effect.
Here are the results of the two pages that I linked to:
Before The Hoth: #18
After The Hoth: #12
Increase: 6 positions
Before The Hoth: #23
After The Hoth: #15
Increase: 8 positions
And for comparison, here are two more pages that I didn’t link to with The Hoth:
Increase: 3 positions
Increase: 7 positions
There are a couple observations of the above results worth noting. Firstly, the increase in rankings from The Hoth weren’t very sizable – particularly when you consider that these are ranking for very long tail phrases. I’d have hoped for rather more movement in exchange for my $60. That said, it appears that the service did create some movment in the SERPs.
Additionally, note that the pages that I didn’t apply The Hoth to – which are on the same domain and rank for keywords with a similar competition level – also saw some noticeable increases in rankings.
This would suggest that Google was discovering links I’d previously built to the site homepage and that this increase in overall trust was causing all the pages of my site to rise up the rankings.
And while the sample size is admittedly quite small, the average increase in rankings with The Hoth was 7 places while it was 5 places without The Hoth.
Conclusion Of My Review Of The Hoth
Overall I have to admit I’m a little disappointed. It seems that The Hoth only managed to increase my rankings for long tail keywords by just 2 places in comparison to my “control” pages. And for that, $60 sounds a lot of money.
This is a real shame because I had quite high hopes for the service. But maybe I’ve been unfair in some way? If so, I’d love to hear what I could have done better/differently next time.
The Benefits Of The Hoth
It’s not all bad news of course. I like the way in which you can specify multiple keywords for each URL to maintain link diversity. The articles produced were reasonable (not that you’d expect a work of Shakespeare from a link building service) and the customer service was excellent. Ordering a package is simplicity itself and my order was completed well in advance of the promised schedule.
Why This Works
It would require a whole series of posts for me to explain exactly how it all works, but here are the basics.
The Weaknesses Of The Hoth
What is the point of a link building service if the results are negligible? Overall I was unimpressed with the results though I wonder if buying only the smallest package was at least partly to blame for this lack of movement. That said, for $200 at the time of writing, the next package up is a big investment – especially when I’ve had very little result from their basic package.
